Time for Bed – Beating the Exhaustion Epidemic
We should be spending more time on our mattress and beds according to holistic doctor Frank Lipman.
According to the holistic doctor Frank Lipman an 'exhaustion epidemic' is sweeping across the Western world. If you surveyed a random slice of the British public, chances are a percentage of people will report an uneasy relationship with their mattress and beds. Lipman has written a book that has become something of a hit in the States called, Spent? End Exhaustion and Feel Great Again. And Americans are said to be queuing up for his services in a bid to feel better about their beds.
Beds and Sleep – More than Run Down?
According to Dr Lipman, we are not just simply a bit run down but are continually in a state of feeling 'spent'. It's time we spent more time on our mattress and beds and examined what might be keeping us awake. The Dr believes that people who come to him with a wide range of problems from low sex drive to headaches are all exhausted, even if they don't realise it. Dr Lipman's book has been embraced by celebrities including Kevin Bacon and Gwyneth Paltrow. But behind the book is an idea that isn't rocket science – we need to spend quality time on our mattress and beds and achieve a good night's sleep. Some of his tips to achieve quality sleep includes:
Electronic sundown – shutting off all electronics including mobiles, TV, computers etc by 10pm
Beds should be in cave like conditions – cool (with a window open) and completely dark (using blackout curtains if need be, or an eye mask). Even bedside clocks should be covered. Light will interrupt melatonin levels, even turning the light on to go to the loo will disturb your body's susceptibility to sleep so try and go with the light's off!
The Meaning of Life
Dr Lipman says our bodies are programmed with an internal body clock, but this is continually being interrupted because of our modern lifestyle. A lifestyle where our beds are surrounded by TVs and mobiles, where we eat takeaways or processed meals on our mattress or in bed – all contributes to what he's dubbed a 'lifestyle jet lag'. Our internal clocks are not ticking properly. Natural light and letting your body listen to the seasons (spending more time in our beds in dark, winter months than short, summer ones) can help contribute to a good night's sleep. Eating a big breakfast and lunch, and a small, light dinner will also help our 'food clock' which impacts on our metabolism. He also recommends the usual steps – cutting out alcohol, caffeine and doing light exercise. As well as unusual steps, such as doing voluntary work. The more meaning in life, the happier and less stressed you'll be.
