Mattress Matters – Experts Warn Against Fatigue
Experts are urging health professionals, such as surgeons to spend more time in their beds – the mattress is just as vital as the operating table.
We all know the importance of sleep, and yet the cliché of the overworked, fatigued junior doctor is an enduring one. It seems an accepted rite of passage that those becoming doctors in general hospitals are expected to work all hours. And yet, experts say it's crucial they spend quality time in their beds, and that they ignore their mattress at their, and their patients' peril.
Bed and Mattress Matters for Health Professionals
A panel of experts at the US Institute of Medicine has stepped forward with recommendations for American surgical residents - and UK health professionals should take note. Their mattress and beds are crucial in ensuring they are operating at their best when they are at the operating table. The panel urged surgical staff to work no more than 16 hours without a mandatory five-hour sleep break. There's a concern that many medical professionals simply don't see enough of their beds, but spending the recommended eight hours on their mattress a night can impact on how they function in their jobs.
Fatigue Can Cause Fatal Errors
Scientific studies into sleep have shown time and again the devastating impact fatigue can have. Beds and mattresses should feature highly on the priority list for medical staff. The conclusions of the panel were that fatigue dramatically increases the risk of errors – something which can be life or death in a hospital environment. A high quality mattress is as crucial in a surgeon's toolkit as a scalpel. Spending the recommended time in their beds could save lives.
Sleeping on the Job
Fatigue impacts on many professions, but there are many whose lives are dependent on health practitioners not to make mistakes. Other careers where sleep should be a priority include pilots and air traffic controllers – factoring in quality mattress time is essential in such jobs. However, anyone who gets behind the wheel of a car needs to be looking after their mattress and sleeping habits – fatigue is the biggest killer when it comes to traffic accidents in the UK.
