Mattress for supportive sleep
A supportive mattress is one of the most important parts of a good night's sleep.
If you're having trouble sleeping, it could be because the mattress you're sleeping on doesn't give you enough support. It's a common problem, because most people don't buy new mattresses very often, so the chances are that yours just isn't giving you the same support it was several years ago.
Assessing your old mattress
So how do you know when it's time to buy a new mattress? Deep down, you probably know already, but good mattresses can be expensive, and you may be putting off buying a new one. Every week you wait, however, is another 55-70 hours of sleep on top of your old mattress, so here are a couple of ways you can assess whether you need a new mattress now:
Had your mattress over eight years? The suggested lifespan of a mattress is around eight years. Considering that you spend around one third of your life in bed, eight years is a long time for a mattress to last. If you've had yours longer than this, it might be time for a change.
Is your mattress second-hand? Whilst most sleep experts would advise against using a second-hand mattress, many people still do. That's because it's a cheaper alternative the buying new, and if you're furnishing a flat or living on a tight budget, it could be your best option. You won't know how old it is, however, and because it was originally bought for someone else, your mattress could be all wrong for you in the first place.
Do you wake up with aches and pains? If you're waking up in the morning and don't feel fully rested, your mattress could be to blame. Whilst there are a number of reasons for poor sleep, aches and pains are often caused by a lack of mattress support. The Sleep Council suggests that a new, more comfortable mattress could give you over 40 minutes of extra quality sleep each night, so it's worth considering a new one.
