Mattress, Beds – What's Under Yours?
Our mattress and beds tend to be where we hide some of our most precious possessions – what's under yours?
Our mattress and beds can be more than places where we sleep and relax – it seems where we lay our head at night is often seen as the safest place in our home. It's something of a cliché that we stuff our money in our mattress. Beds have been hiding places for centuries though, and hiding cash under the bed was a move triggered by mistrust of banks – a mistrust that has witnessed a sudden reappearance in recent times as the credit crunch continues its squeeze.
Mattress, Beds – Money, Guns and Love Letters
There are perhaps three things that people are likely to hide under their beds or under the mattress – as well as the obvious hiding place for cash, it seems those who fear intrusion or burglars are likely to keep something a little more sinister under their mattress and beds. People who fear burglars have been known to keep weapons under their beds – items such as baseball bats are often hidden under beds. In America, it's not unheard of that actual guns are kept under the mattress. In fact, guns under the mattress are not unheard of in the UK - a recent news report on the BBC said a loaded gun was hidden under a mattress in the hotel room of a man accused of shooting three police officers. Thankfully, for the majority of us weapons under the beds are not indulged in. Our beds can be places of romance too – and for some, storing a love letter or poem under their mattress or pillow is one way of keeping a loved one close to our hearts.
Prisoner Hides in Mattress
One of the more unusual things to be hidden in or under a mattress has to be the US prisoner, James Springette. The man had been detained in a maximum security prison for allegedly smuggling cocaine into the country. But the man escaped from the maximum security prison by hiding in his prison cell mattress. Remarkably, after crawling into the mattress, the mattress was transported undetected past seven checkpoints inside the jail. The mattress was then put in a truck, which drove off. Authorities say he got inside help, but admitted escapes from the Colombia prison system are frequent.
