Mattress, Beds – The Key to Student Success

As well as books and top teachers, it seems beds and mattresses could be the secret to student success.

It may be the last thing a parent thinks of when they are urging their children on to academic success – but investing in a high quality mattress and sturdy beds could be a vital ingredient to achieve the top grades. In fact, quality sleep has been proven to be crucial when it comes to studying and memory.

Our beds can be good places to think. Lying on our mattress every evening gives us a necessary chance to process the day's activities and settle the mind, ready for a good night's sleep in order to tackle the next day. Studies have shown that lying down can help trigger the creative part of our brains – which explains why novelists and artists often get ideas lying in the bath, or on their mattress – many great ideas seem to appear in a novelist's mind in the morning. In fact our beds are where some of the greatest creative works have been formed, Paul McCartney famously penned Yesterday after the song came to him in a dream.

Beds and Study

The idea of cramming in all-night study sessions before exams is an erroneous one. In fact, hitting their mattress rather than the books is advised as a result of a study at the University of Washington. Students who spent the right number of hours in their beds for quality sleep are more likely to remember facts. The study found that while we are asleep on our beds, our minds consolidate the things we learned that day. The study monitored students and how long they slept on their mattress and beds, and found that those that got a good night's rest achieved better results when learning to play a video game. Those that didn't spent the requisite time on their mattress, struggled as their brains were still catching up. The study said that sleep isn't a passive thing, but can help the brain absorb what students learned during the day.

Mattress Matters: Bedtime

Pulling all-nighters than could in fact be damaging a student's learning process. The study revealed helpful tips for students who want to maximise their learning. By studying in the morning, you may forget what you learned in the afternoon – however if you then hit the mattress and get a good night's sleep, the sleep restores some of what was learned.
