Mattress, Beds and Palatial Luxury
It seems the lure of a palatial mattress is enough to tempt honeymooners to go to some bizarre extremes – Saddam Hussein's bed is being offered to honeymooners for £150 a night.
It's one of the oddest stories to emerge this year – the idea that honeymooners would pay to sleep on a former dictator's bed to celebrate a marriage. Sharing a mattress with the man or woman you plan to spend the rest of your life with is one thing, but opting to rent the bed of one of history's most notorious dictators quite another. And yet, reports have emerged that the former Iraq dictator's bed, complete with palatial mattress, is on offer to newlyweds for £150 a night. It's somewhat macabre, but Hussein's old, bomb-ravaged palace is undergoing renovation in an attempt to kick start the country's war-ravaged tourism industry.
A Mattress Fit for a Dictator?
A tourism official clearly believes the thought of staying in the dictator's former bed is a winning one: “We hope that many people will visit,” he told The Times. But for most of us, the idea of resting easy on the mattress of a bloody dictator is more likely to be something of a problem. Dreams can quickly turn into nightmares when you contemplate the misery, death and destruction the dictator inflicted, as well as the horrific, on-going war he helped trigger. And the image of Hussein being executed is another horror that's unlikely to give you a peaceful night's sleep. And yet, the palatial excess of the former dictator's bedroom is hoped to be a luxurious pull – as well as the king sized mattress and beds, the palace once featured chandeliers, Roman columns and huge bathrooms.
Palatial Beds: The Ultimate Luxury
The reconstruction may take some time – Saddam's palace was famously looted after he was deposed – although the outlying buildings have already been transformed into luxury hotel rooms. The palace attracts around a thousand locals a day. But the honeymoon package to sleep on the former dictator's mattress may be a step too far. One Iraqi questioned by The Times newspaper summed up these obvious misgivings: “I don't think it would be an easy thing for newlyweds to sleep on the bed of a dead person.”
Beds and mattresses are certainly associated with ultimate luxury – if you book a five star hotel you expect a huge bed. And some palatial beds can cost as much as a brand new car. But i isn't necessary to fork out so much on a new mattress or beds – you can find amazing quality beds fit for a king at competitive prices online.
