Mattress Bed Bug Misery – Letting the Bed Bug's Bite
Bed bugs are causing mattress misery according to recent news reports from the United States and Canada.
There are many reasons to buy a new mattress, beds can get worn out after years of use and a new mattress can help give you the support and comfort you need. Old mattresses can sag, be bumpy, lose their definition and end up ruining a deep sleep tossing you back into the land of the awake. But perhaps one of the major reasons why people will buy a new mattress or bed is the small but menacing bed bug.
Mattress – Bed Bug Blues
People often confuse bed bugs with dust mites. Dust mites trigger asthma, bed bugs suck blood and cause skin irritation. Bed bugs like to live in the mattress but were in fact practically wiped out from the UK and America decades ago. But the insects have bounced back after suspicions the bed bugs developed resistance to pesticides. There is a reason why the insect loves your mattress – bed bugs thrive in warm surroundings. Measuring up to 5mm wide, they're commonly found in the seams of a mattress, bed frames and headboards. Bed bugs suck blood and in extreme cases can cause anaemia.
Mattress, Beds and Bedding Binned
If your mattress is infested the number of bed bugs could rapidly increase and even deprived of blood, they can survive for up to a year. It's advised you don't buy a second hand mattress or beds. In America a recent news report showed how if you have an infected mattress, bed bugs can cause misery – one family was forced out of its bedrooms by bed bugs. The family is covered in bed bug bites as a result of the infestation which forced them to throw away the twin mattress beds of their daughters as well as the couple's queen-size mattress. The family had to sleep on an inflatable mattress to avoid being bitten alive. And even when they weren't being bitten the entire family suffered sleep deprivation saying the worry of being bitten kept them tossing and turning.
Avoid Second Hand Mattress, Beds and Clothes
And in Canada their mattress, beds and furniture aren't safe either. After 50 years of extinction, the bed bug is back on its shores, with bed bug infestations doubling in the last year. If you have an infestation in your mattress, beds can become scary places – bed bugs apply anaesthetic to your skin so you don't wake up from the biting, but will bite for up to 15 minutes sucking a fair bit of blood.
To fight bed bug infestations it's recommended you clean and vacuum your mattress, beds and furniture regularly, avoid second hand mattresses, beds, furniture and clothes.
