Mattress and Beds – A Marriage Made in Heaven

Research shows that married couples love their mattress more than singletons, it seems being wed means you'll get a better night's sleep.

It may be surprising to those couples who are envious of singletons who have the mattress entirely to themselves. Beds, for some married couples, can be battlegrounds. The cliché is of a couple seething on their mattress as one partner hogs the space or the duvet – or worse: snores. And sure, there are some marriages that face such night terrors. But research shows that in fact, being married is in fact the secret to a good night's sleep.

Love Your Mattress – Love Your Husband

A study into the sleeping habits of women found that married women sleep better on their beds than single women. If you suffer from poor sleeping habits and lie alone on your mattress, the answer may not be sleeping pills! Researchers say finding a husband is a good place to start for single women looking for a good night's sleep. And yet, the popular conception is many husbands are in fact to blame for disrupted sleep, thanks to their snoring habits. It seems feeling relaxed enough on your mattress to enter effortlessly into the land of nod demands a certain emotional, as well as physical, sense of well being. A high quality mattress can help with the physical challenge of achieving a good night's sleep, but being in a stable relationship offers a sense of security that leads to a less troubled night than those women who are unmarried or have broken up with a partner.

A Good Night's Sleep? Get Wed and Buy a New Bed

For high quality sleep, you need more than a fabulously supportive bed – you need a fabulously supportive husband too. The study was conducted by assistant professor Wendy Troxel at America's University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania. The research showed those in a long, stable marriage slept better than newlyweds who perhaps weren't as adjusted to sharing a mattress and bed with their partners yet. The researchers studied 360 women of an average age of 51, and monitoring their REM and brain waives to record their sleep patterns.

The findings on how newly married, long married and consistently single women slept on their beds were presented at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Society.
