Love Your Mattress – Lock Away Your Computer

If you love gaming, it's time to switch your affections and fall for your mattress. Switch off the computer and get to bed!

Gaming can be addictive. But research from the University of Arkansas reveals that gamers actually experience less sleep than non-gamers. If you spend more time at your computer than on your mattress it could be time to pull the plug. Studies show that those who don't sleep enough experience more ill-health and are more vulnerable to illness.

Beds not Screens

The study revealed that gamers sleep on average 1.6 hours less per night and spend less time in their beds than non-gamers. They also sleep less deeply than non gamers. The research also showed that those who admitted they were addicted to gaming didn't see a correlation to their addiction and their poor sleeping habits. Sleep experts have long advised that people who struggle with sleep or have insomnia should make an effort to switch off all electrical devices and turn off all entertainment when they go to bed. Watching TV in bed for example is a no go – as are mobiles, laptops and stereos.

Computers: Give it a Rest

If you play computer games for over seven hours a week, scientists have warned it could alter your biological clock. Computer screens emit bright light, and some doctors have a theory that this unnatural light hinders the natural production of melatonin. This hormone is central in regulating our sleeping and waking hours. The logic extends not just to gamer but to anyone who spends too much time in front of their computers, either for work or pleasure. When you get home from work, you should focus on relaxing and unwinding and avoiding artificial stimulation like computer screens.

Sleep Deprived – Hit the Mattress

Being sleep deprived can trigger a whole host of health problems. Psychologist Dr Amanda Woolems from the research team told the press: “Our statistics revealed those who admitted addiction [to gaming] scored higher on a sleepiness scale.” Gaming may be a fun way to stay awake, but it can create a nocturnal nightmare when it comes to going to bed. Extreme gamers slept almost two hours less than non gamers. Sleep deprivation impacts on your daytime functions, triggering cognitive impairment. And for many children and teenagers who have a computer as a part of their daily routine, it's important to try and notice any sleep disturbance or problems so the issue can be addressed and fixed – safeguarding their health and well being.
