Subject: weight of mattress
What is the difference between the different weights on the mattress toppers. I weigh 105 kg and have neck pains – is it better to go for a 75 kg/m3 or 50 kg/m3 or is this not related to your weight.
Thanks
Dave
Thank you for your email. The different densities on the toppers actually depict the amount of foam per cubic metre. The higher the density the longer the lifespan and durability of the product, hence the 50kg toppers come with a 5 year warranty and the 75kg toppers come with a 10 year warranty. Although predominantly the density of the foam is about lifespan, the lower density is also very slightly softer in feel. As a guide we normally recommend the 50kg toppers are suitable for light to medium build people, whereas the 75kg is suitable for light, medium and heavier built people. Although a heavier built person can use the 50kg topper it will soften very quickly and you won’t get the lifespan from it.
From your weight, I really would recommend you consider the 75kg density toppers, if you can stretch to it with your budget. This would give you the longevity and durability and offer you the better support. It is then down to how deep you wish to go with the topper. The 5cm would offer you a slight cushioning effect, but you will quickly reach your current mattress base and so is a medium/firm feel. The 7.5cm will offer a little more cushioning and is actually the optimum depth recommended by the industry, this gives you a little more memory foam into which to sink and will give a medium feel. The 10cm is obviously that much more foam and will again give quite a medium/soft feel as you have a fair amount of foam into which you will sink.
The other thing to consider when looking at the depth is the more you sink into the foam, the more body heat you will generate as you are sinking into a dense material with little airflow. Therefore if you are a “warm person” in bed, you may want to consider either the 5 or 7.5cm to limit the amount of sinking. We do obviously offer the toppers with a heat relieving material called Outlast. This was originally designed by NASA for use in the space suits to control the body temperature of the astronauts whilst in space. This technology has been taken and works by storing your body heat in micro-capsules which are within the material. This heat is then released back to you should it detect a drop in your body temperature, keeping you at an even temperature throughout the night, or slowly dissipates away from you should it not be required.
Hope this helps in your decision making.
Kind regards
