Beds – Sleep Deprivation Rife
It's time to reassess the importance of our beds – mattresses and beds should be top priorities as sleep deprivation gets worse, according to recent research.
Sleep deprivation is more widespread than previously thought. In fact, recent research suggests that 89% of people aren't achieving the recommended eight hours a night. Our beds are places where we retire to far too late, and when we get into our beds we find it hard to get to sleep. A huge 62% of those questioned said they found it difficult to get out of their beds in the morning. The findings were based on a survey of a thousand people. Investing in comfortable, supportive mattresses and seeing our beds as important places can help. Buying beautiful linen or bed sheets, and adding a touch of luxury to our mattresses and beds is one way of recognising the value of a good night's sleep. And yet, many people fall into bed at too late an hour, eat in bed, watch TV in bed and do anything but sleep. Sleep therapists believe it's time we reassessed our attitude to our beds and treated our mattress as a place dedicated to sleep – it's time to banish TVs, mobile phones and laptops from the bedroom.
Beds – Places of Rest and Relaxation
The survey was conducted by Empathy Research, and found that over half of those questioned said they found it hard to maintain concentration at work, 83% felt they lost their vitality in the day and 24% admitted to making mistakes. Lack of sleep can impact heavily on how we perform and feel.
If we don't get the recommended eight hours in our beds, where we're not tossing and turning on our mattress but getting quality REM sleep, it can impact on our health. But we're more likely to drink high energy drinks or caffeine when we're tired for a boost, making it harder when we do sleep not to toss and turn on our mattress because of too many stimulants – it's a Catch 22. Sleep therapists recommend a balanced diet, exercise and a pro-active approach to stress to help achieve quality sleep.
Tossing and Turning on Mattresses
However, for some it may be more than a matter of lifestyle. We may feel like we've been tossing and turning on our mattress and beds all night if we're one of the percentage of people suffering from sleep apnoea. Sleep apnoea is where you temporarily stop breathing in your sleep and as a result, your body wakes you up to breathe – some sufferers can be woken 30 times an hour leaving a permanent sense of exhaustion. Although it's ideal that we spend eight hours asleep in our beds, researchers also say focus should be on quality over quantity sleep – disrupted sleep can mean it's irrelevant if you're lying in bed for eight hours,if you spend most of that time tossing and turning.
