Beds and the 'Sex Crunch'
A survey by The Sleep Council for National Bed Month showed that our mattresses are seeing less action in the credit crunch.
The mattress goes through all the trials and tribulations of life – most of us are conceived on a mattress, some of us are born on a mattress, and many die on one. In fact the whole cycle of life takes place in bed. And as well as these momentous occasions, we spend up to a quarter of our lives in bed. So it's not surprising that it's recommended that we replace our mattress every ten years.
'The Sex Crunch'
But perhaps the most duress a mattress goes through is the result of our sex lives. The Sleep Council however has conducted a study that has prompted them to claim that our sex lives have been drastically affected by the credit crunch. It states our mattress and bed springs are “bouncing up to a third less often” than they were a year ago. The stress and worry of the recession is being blamed as money worries keep us awake. The survey found:
28% of those surveyed said they have less action in bed than a year ago
The 35-44 year old age range seemed to suffer the most: 34% said their sex lives had been affected
41% of people said they stayed home more and went out less, but;
85% of those questioned spend their nights watching TV
Not going out, it seems, may be the new staying in, but 18% of us opt to do housework as opposed to the 21% who do have sex. It seems Brits are boring in bed. Stress, feeling unhappy with ourselves, arguments and money worries are all impacting on our lack of activity in the bedroom.
Despite the cold front from the credit crunch, our beds are still the centre of our sex lives; 80% of those questioned said that their mattress was where they enjoyed being intimate with 67% citing a comfortable bed as the most essential part of an improved sex life. Beds still come out top when it comes to sex, with 85% of those surveyed saying their bed was the best location for intimacy. Jessica Alexander of The Sleep Council said in a press release: “We've always known that a good bed was important to a good night's sleep, but it's obviously number one for nuptials too.”
The financial freeze may have cooled down our sex lives, but it's not all doom and gloom. The survey also found that 81% of people agreed that adversity brings people closer together.
