Beds and Mattresses – The Secret of Exam Success
When it comes to passing your exams, you might want to consider investing in a new bed.
Scientists have said that schoolchildren might do better in their exams if they paid more attention to their beds. It seems hitting the mattress, as well as hitting the books, will optimise a child's potential for doing well in tests – especially in that dreaded of dreaded subjects, maths. The University of Pittsburgh has found that high quality sleep helps children to perform better in exams.
Sleep Your Way to Success
It may seem like common sense to many parents. If a child, just like an adult, doesn't get enough sleep or spends too little time in their beds, they can be grouchy, moody and emotional the next day. Sleep is crucial to helping us, no matter what our age, perform at our best. The scientists are reconfirming what many parents already suspect – that a night of good quality sleep with fewer awakenings results in better grades at school. However, it doesn't mean that chaining your child to their mattress for long periods is the answer – quality sleep doesn't always equate to quantity. Less awakenings in the night rather than actual length of time asleep is more important for optimum performance.
Hate Maths? Sleep on it!
The researchers studied the sleep patterns of 56 teenagers in their studies. Those who experienced deeper, undisturbed sleep received better results in maths, history and English. Falling alseep and waking up easily is key – those who struggle to sleep or have more night awakenings are more vulnerable in the day time when it comes to their performance and functionality. The scientists behind the study say the results show how important high quality beds and mattresses are for teenagers who need to achieve a good night's sleep. The authors of the report said it showed, “overwhelming evidence of the importance of sleep” for adolescents.
Sleep is clearly crucial for optimum academic performance, and yet exams can be sources of extreme stress that upset sleep patterns. The trigger is finding ways to handle stress and set your teen up for a good night's sleep – make sure their mattress is comfortable and supportive, that there are no computers, mobiles or TVs in their bedroom, that they stick to a regular bedtime routine and their rooms have thick curtains to block out unwanted light that might disrupt melatonin levels.
