Sleepless nights can become the bane of your life, which is why it's worth considering investing in a decent mattress – beds should encourage, not discourage, a good night's sleep.

There are many famous people who have come out saying they struggle with a good night's sleep. Pop stars and musicians frequently top the insomnia list thanks often to their lifestyles. They can go from mattress to mattress, from hotel to hotel, with late nights and partying lifestyles. And Toyah Wilcox may not be the big star she once was, but now aged 50 she's come out saying insomnia has plagued her since the age of 14. Getting just four hours' sleep on most nights, Wilcox told the press she usually gets up at 4am.

Invest in a Good Mattress

Sorting out your sleep patterns includes investing in a good mattress – beds should be welcoming, comfortable and supportive. If your mattress is more than eight years old, chances are it's not supporting your spine properly or efficiently as it will have deteriorated in that time. Wilcox admitted that she hadn't bought a new bed or mattress in 30 years – something that could be key to her insomnia. As well as checking your mattress, you should eliminate any sources of stimulation in your bedroom – don't keep your laptop on your mattress, your mobile on your bedside table or even have a TV in your bedroom.

Check your Mattress, Clear your Bedroom

As well as checking your mattress and clearing your bedroom of noise or disruption inspiring gadgets, make sure you get the light and temperature right. Your bedroom should be in complete darkness – light can stimulate you into waking earlier than you need to. As well as a good mattress, invest in black-out curtains. Being cold will keep you awake – cold feet especially. But being too hot will also wake you – a good compromise is to wear socks in bed so the rest of you doesn't over heat but your toes stay snugly warm.

The Sleep Check-List

Functioning without sleep is a reality for many of us – whether you're a student busy socialising late hours, a new mum with late hours and disrupted sleep patterns, or have nervous energy from a new job – investing in a good mattress and thinking about your sleep routine can help. Sleep experts say around half of those suffering with sleep disorders can improve their sleep by changing their behaviour. Consider this check-list if you're struggling to sleep:

  • Is your bedroom too light?
  • Do you have cold toes?
  • Are you up watching late night movies?
  • Do you watch your digital clock anxiously?
  • Are you checking your mobile or email before bed?
  • Is your mattress uncomfortable?

If the answer is 'yes' to any of the above, it's easy to take steps to make your mattress and bedroom more conducive to sleep.
