- Mattresses and Beds
More of us use our mattress and beds as places to flick on our laptops, ping off a few emails, catch up on Facebook and some even take our work to bed. The evolution of remote working and advances in technology, mean we can now work from our mattress not our desks. But taking technology into our beds could be forcing couples into separate bedrooms. More couples need to invest in a spare mattress to have a place to escape to from the hive of activity some bedrooms have become.
Mattresses Made for Sleeping
The Sleep Council blames computers and gadgets for transforming the average mattress into a hub of hi-tech activity. The bedroom should be a place dedicated to sleep, but game consoles, laptops, mobile phones and BlackBerrys are forcing some people off the shared mattress and onto the spare bed in an attempt to get a good night's sleep. The study by the Sleep Council found that a quarter of couples are regularly having to invest in a separate mattress and beds in order to sleep apart to escape their gadget-obsessed partners.
Reclaim your Beds from Gadgets
Once a month, a quarter of those questioned said they left the shared mattress at least once a month in search of a quiet night's sleep, with 9% saying they always slept in separate beds. The poll by the Sleep Council discovered the nation was addicted to nocturnal technical activities, with one in three making a phone call or emailing and one in five surfing the web, playing games or listening to an MP3 or iPod on the shared mattress. In fact, The Sleep Council found that worshiping technology in our beds outweighs the number of people who make time to prayer before bed – with just a tenth of those questioned saying they said their prayers.
Technology Takes over Bedtime Routines
Busy bed time routines however are counterproductive to a good night's sleep, and as some couples are being forced off their shared mattress, the predominance of technology around bed time could be damaging relationships. The predominance of electrical gadgets is clearly on our minds even if we're not using them in bed – a fifth of those in the survey said they charged their mobiles before turning off their bedroom light. Not getting enough sleep can be damaging for your emotional and physical well being.
